COURSES

Currently, I teach one undergraduate course, Principles of Ecology, and two graduate courses, Population Biology and Statistical Ecology. I also participate in a graduate readings course, Advances in Herpetology, and occasionally in the graduate Seminar in Ecology and Seminar in Evolution. Topics of previous seminars include Habitat Structure, History and Philosophy of Ecology, Life-History Tactics, Ordination Techniques, Restoration Ecology, Species as Particles, and Urban Ecology.

I revamped the Principles of Ecology course last year, dispensing with a textbook and adding a variety of activities designed to engage a largely pre-professional audience in basic ecology. Although students in last year's class varied widely in their reaction to the new format, the class displayed a substantially better understanding of the course material than did previous classes. I am continuing the revamping process, adding web-based mathematics and statistics exercises and in-class follow-up sessions. This work is being supported by an Innovative Teaching Grant from the University.
