Philosophy of Religion (PHI 3700)
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:00-12:15

This course is designed to introduce students to the main topics and debates in contemporary analytic philosophy of religion, including

  • the proper characterization of the divine attributes and their mutual consistency,
  • the ontological, cosmological, and teleological arguments for the existence of God,
  • the problem of evil as an argument against the existence of God,
  • the relationship between reason and religious belief, and
  • the relationship between religion and morality.

Course requirements include three examinations and two short argumentative papers.

Augustine's Confessions (PHH 6938)
Tuesdays, 3:05-5:50

This course is designed as an intensive look at Augustine's Confessions: its literary structure and qualities, its philosophical and theological contents, and its place in Augustine's writings as a whole. A close reading of the whole text of the Confessions (not just the autobiographical parts) will be supplemented by other texts of Augustine and essays in Augustine's Confessions: Critical Essays and other sources.
