Calculation of Center of Gravity with Cylindrical Elements

by Donald Roby

Submitted : Spring 2012

In this report you will find an excel spreadsheet that plots the x and y points of the center of gravity with the cylindrical elements. One only has to change the radius and the area on the graph that the object is placed per the degree and this spreadsheet will give you the total area and the center of gravity on the x and y axis. This was set up to the half and full circles first to make sure that the spreadsheet was working. After this was complete then the last object was place into the spreadsheet and it plotted all the points and supplied us with the information that we required along with the center of gravity of this shape.

The spreadsheet was set up into parts so that no matter what information that was given, after being place into the spreadsheet it could calculate the information that was required. You will also see some calculation that was done by hand that shows how accurate the spreadsheet is. During the design of this sheet, it was found that our hand calculations were off and the sheet had the numbers right. Only after redoing the number were the mistakes found. This sheet works great for finding the center of gravity of some odd shapes that would normally take some time to figure out by hand.
