Design of a Grain Hopper

by Augustin Tommy Jr.

Submitted : Spring 2012

The purpose of this project is to apply multivariable calculus in order to solve a quite common engineering problem. The problem requires us to first derive a cost function from the information given to us. After deriving the cost function, one must use one of two methods in order to find a function that will yield the lengths of A, B and L that will minimize the cost of making the hopper. The two methods that one can use is by way of Lagrange’s Multipliers, and on the other hand, one can begin finding these lengths by finding the partial derivatives of the cost function with respect to A and B, after L is found in terms of A and B.
