Using Gompertz Model to Compare the Growth Curve of Two Bacterias

by Mervyn Cedre

Submitted : Fall 2011

The typical growth curve for any bacteria has an S-shaped form, where N/N0 represents the ratio of number of bacteria to the initial population and t is the time.

Several parameters are use in characterizing the growth curve:

1. The Asymptote A, which represents the ultimate value of ln N/N0

2. The lag time tL

3. The maximum specific growth rate.

Gompertz model is the model that we will use to represent the growth curve:

y = a. exp [-exp (b-ct) = (ae-e^ (b-ct))

where a, b, and c are constants, which can be obtained by fitting data
