Natural Sciences >> PhysicsCalculating Rocket Weight for Space Travelby William Haworth
Submitted : Fall 2019
This paper explores the math and calculations behind of much fuel in weight it would take to put a homemade rocket into space. We derive earth’s escape velocity and relate that to the conservation of momentum. It will show how an object accelerates itself using thrust by ejecting part of its mass at high speeds. Momentum ultimately gets conserved. In short, we will take my weight, the weight of a hypothetical rocket, earth’s escape velocity, a fuel burn rate, and some other assumptions to find how much fuel we will need to leave the atmosphere.
