Cost Difference of Machining Dimensions at the Minimum, Maximum, and Nominal Values of the Tolerance

Submitted : Spring 2018

In this project I used excel to approximate a formula that mirrors half of a bore that we machine in a part at my job, then used to calculus to find the volume of that bore. Once I knew the volume of the bore I calculated the price of the material in that volume, and therefore calculated the cost of that scrap. After reviewing these results, I have concluded that for the shop I work in the cost difference of the scrap at the different values is financially insignificant as we do not run enough of these parts to bring the value of that scrap up to a significant number.
