The Dangers of Projectile Motion

by Christina Williamson

Submitted : Spring 2015

Projectile motion is free fall with an initial horizontal velocity that has no effect on the vertical motion. Using these combined effects of both the vertical and horizontal motions a parabolic path is produced. This project is made to see how dangerous stones thrown over foot bridges above highways can be.  I used the well-known “Monkey and Hunter” experiment to predict scenarios that generate the problem. This parabolic motion can cause serious damage to vehicles and even harm people. Introducing policies about added structures on foot bridges, and allowing people to know the danger based on the numbers can lessen future damage.
