Development of Analytic Tools for Green Florescent Protein (GFP) Health Span Curves of Caenorhabditi

by David Lipps

Submitted : Spring 2014

Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) transfected with green fluorescent protein (GFP) are used to measure protein production in response to drug treatments and metabolites when compared to a control. Measuring the fluorescence of GFP over the lifespan of C. elegans worms produces a health span curve. To help discover trends in health span curves three functions were developed in the form of a Microsoft Excel module. These functions calculate the total area, arc length, and mean value of health span curves along any desired time interval and the uncertainty of error associated with the fluorescence measurements.
