Simulation of Model Rocket Flight

by Lauren Forst

Submitted : Fall 2012

The student was provided with a graph for the thrust of a model rocket powered with an Estes A8-3 engine. Mass of the rocket (in kilograms), air density, drag coefficient, and frontal area of the rocket were given. The student was asked to plot the velocity and height of the rocket as functions of time, from launch to the time the rocket reached its maximum height. The student approached the problem by interpolating data from the given thrust plot, then used Euler’s numerical method to plot the velocity and maximum height of the model rocket. Interpolation, Euler’s numerical method, and plotting velocity and maximum height were done using Matlab.
