Diffusion of Ions in Solution

by Michael Kling

Submitted : Fall 2008

The following is a discussion on determining at what point ionic diffusion and electric potential are in equilibrium when uneven concentrations of an ionic solution are separated by a permeable membrane. This is achieved by constructing an integral and evaluating it at variable endpoints. This demonstrates that the natural log of the ratio of ionic concentration is proportional to the electrical potential difference. This is a confirmation of the Nernst Equation.
