Engineering >> Chemical & Biomedical EngineeringAnalysis of an Adiabatic Batch Reactorby Andy Rodriguez
Submitted : Spring 2012 A batch reactor is a vessel that is used very often within many different process industries. It is used so frequently within the many industries due to its versatility; one vessel alone is capable of carrying out many different operations making it extremely useful. In this project I was to test the amount of time it takes for the hydrolysis of acetic anhydride in an adiabatic batch reactor. I first did research on the process of a batch reactor as well as figuring out how adiabatic process worked. I then derived the equation for disappearance of acetic anhydride, and the equation of energy balance both as functions of time. Then, using excel, I plugged the formulas into spreadsheets, and entered times in the size of .05 minuets until the concentration reached 95% conversion. I then repeated the experiment with an initial temperature of 30 °C instead of 20 °C.
