Deflection of a Diving Board

by Marcel Mahabir

Submitted : Spring 2012

This project explores the minimum height over a pool required to install a residential diving board so that its edge does not dip into the water when a specific load is dropped onto it from a specific height. By utilizing the equation of kinetic energy and calculating the velocity of a falling object, we can determine the forces acting on the diving board. With them, we can then create a sheer and bending moment diagram with which the equation of the line of the bending moment can be found. This equation, along with a specified modulus of elasticity and calculated area moment of inertia, can be incorporated into the double integration method in order to obtain the total downward deflection of the diving board, which will be the minimum height requirement.
