Medicine >> BiologyHeart Rate in Rowers and Non-Rowersby Stephanie Martell
Submitted : Spring 2011 The heart rates of six rowers and six non-rowers were taken every thirty minutes throughout the day beginning at 9:00AM and running until 9:00PM on Wednesday March 4th, 2011. The heart rate for rowers peaked around 5:00PM during the middle of rowing practice. The curve for the average of the rowers’ heart rates depicted a bell shaped curve which would indicate a Gaussian distribution. This normal distribution formula was applied to the data and did not fit. The data then had to broken up into three sections: pre-workout, during working, and post-workout to find a model to fit. The sections before and after the workout were fit into a linear function while the section during the workout came out to be a parabolic expression. Bounds were used to write an expression for the heart rate of the Berkeley Preparatory rowers’ heart rate throughout the day as a function of time. The heart rates of the non-rowers were used as a basis to compare the data. The non-rowers had a fairly straight line with no peak. In future experiments, it is recommended that only the heart rate during workouts is used to find a model. A more appropriate function could be found if data was used only during the workout as this data follow a parabolic form. Related Links:
