Engineering >> Mechanical EngineeringHorsepower Analysisby Matthew Correia
Submitted : Fall 2008 By being able to control the amount of horsepower that an engine gives off, one can control speed, acceleration, as well as many other products produced from an engine. With help from engineers and extensive knowledge in calculus and thermodynamics we are able to calculate the horsepower that any engine can give off. The horsepower required for our Pratt & Whitney JT9D engine was approximately 76,650. I was quite surprised to reach this result, but further astonished to learn that other model engines run even higher. The art of flight has always fascinated me and to be able to calculate horsepower given off by a jet engine was truly amazing.
