Flooding is the most frequent and costly disaster in the United States. Floods may become more frequent and endanger more homes due to climate change and sea level rise. One of the best ways to reduce the risk of flooding is to elevate your home. One form of elevation according to building diagrams described by FEMA include crawlspaces. Flood vents are a necessary tool to prevent structural damage. This paper goes into detail about hydrostatic loads on homes with and without flood vents.
