The Application of Fermat’s Ratio in Geology

This paper will explore the relationship between very basic mathematical concepts such as Fermat’s ratio and how one could apply them in the geosciences. Teaching calculus along with teaching various parts of geology is often overlooked and can be utilized to help contextualize geologic processes for students. Also explored in this paper are other applications of calculus in geology, and recommendations for future research.
