To find the area and volume of soil and ground water contaminations using the above spread sheet with data points, one must interpolate and extrapolate the location of equal contamination points (benzene = 50 µg/L, total xylenes = 130 mg/kg.) After plotting these points dived them up into four quadrants, connect them with an ellipse/circular shape unless otherwise stated, then using basic geometry state an equation of the different lines in each quadrant and their domains. Using the equations of the different curves and lines, use calculus to integrate each different function on the respective x-domain for each function. It is safe to assume the none of the ellipses have been shifted off center and that if each function was a full ellipse its center would be at the point (0,0.) by using integration the area of each different quadrant can be found, adding up all the different quadrant gives the total surface area of contamination. Using the given depths, soil density and soil porosity find the total volume of groundwater contamination and the mass of contaminated soil.
