In the medical field it is important to be able to determine the amount of a drug in the human body at any given point in time. The amount of a specific drug in the human body is able to be determined by multiplying the bioavailability of the medication by the dose being given and dividing by the clearance. This calculation is one way to use the trapezoid rule show the area under the curve on a graph with a curved pattern of the drug. These calculations can also be changed into functions in which we would take the definite integral between specific times to find the area under the curve. The results that are obtained can be used to determine when a harmful drug will completely eliminated from the body or when it might be safe to give another dose of the same medication without reaching the harmful level of overdosing.
