Applications of Calculus to Cancerous Cell Growth

by Helen Alonso

Submitted : Spring 2014

The goal of this project is to demonstrate the general relationship between several fundamental concepts in calculus to the approach of evaluating a tumor or cancer cells.  The key concept being utilized will be the Gompertz function which is a mathematical model that relates time and growth patterns. The advantages to using the Gompertz mathematical model will be discussed as well as other difficulties presented to physicians when using a model without accounting for all possible variables. Additionally, a modification to the Benjamin Gompertz model will also be discussed.
