Rifle Marksmanship Analysis

by Giovanni Marinello-Silva

Submitted : Fall 2013

This project presents a mathematical analysis of distance in rifle marksmanship, a fundamental aspect practiced by the U.S. Armed Forces. The firing conditions are first established and the measured data and definitions of a “zero” and minute of angle are presented. The trajectory of the bullet to the target is analyzed first at 300 meters, then again at 600 meters and finally at a target of unknown but approximated distance. The project aims to demonstrate the importance of distance and the proper calibration of a rifle in order to be successful at rifle marksmanship.
