Submitted : Spring 2013 The aim of this project was to find the range of a desirable spring constant for a taping machine with a conveyer belt speed of 100 feet per minute. The dimensions of all parts of the machine were obtained from its design drawing, and the minimum spring constant was given (246.87 N/m). The box being packed could only withstand a force of 5 pound-force, or 22.4 Newtons. Using the drawing, an elaborate force diagram was made with lots of angles to solve for. All the angles would constantly change as the box moves through the machine which is what made the problem complicated. Using the relationship between the angles and the trigonometry functions, the desirable spring constant range turned out to be anywhere from 246.87 N/m to 370.32 N/m. This means that the spring to be used for this machine can be anywhere in that range, but preferably right in the middle.
