Euler-Bernoulli's Beam Bending

by Matthew Carlson

Submitted : Spring 2013

The goal of this project is to create a deflection equation for cantilever beams that will be used to create balconies for an apartment complex. The beams used are oak wood 2x6 boards that will protrude 4 feet from the exterior wall and be under a constant, uniformly distributed load. The deflection equation is found by taking the fourth order derivative of Euler Bernoulli’s beam bending equation and solving it using boundary conditions. Once this is found, the moment of inertia, modulus of elasticity and length can be accounted for, thus producing an accurate deflection equation for the cantilever.
