Submitted : Spring 2013 Mathematical models are useful tools used in many disciplines. A group of simple differential equations that make up the Susceptible Infectious Recovered (SIR) model for diseases was used in this project along with the assumption that a vaccine exists for HIV/AIDS. The objective of this project was to use the SIR model in addition to Maple, a computer algebra system, to display the effects of increasing the rate of vaccination on the disease dynamics of a population. It was found that as the rate of vaccination increases, the maximum number of people that get infected decreases.
