Power Generated by a 2-Stroke Engine

by Timofei Novikov

Submitted : Spring 2012

This project explains a method to estimate horse power of a single-cylinder, two-stroke engine using a graph of cylinder volume versus cylinder pressure. Data points along the graph were used to create equations that closely followed the trends of the functions. Since the net work done on or by the gas in the cylinder is given as the area between functions in the graph, that area was worked out using integration. The cycle speed is given, so the time is derived from that. Horse power is calculated as work over time.
