Volume and Cost of Rainwater Collection Reservoir

by Michael Guy

Submitted : Spring 2022

This project utilizes calculus to compute the volume and cost required to construct Rainwater Collection Reservoirs with a standardized radius of 2m, and height of 5m. Integration is used to calculate the total effective volume and surface area of the reservoir’s funnel, whereas the volume and surface area of the tank is calculated using the known formulas (1) and (5).

The cost of the reservoir was calculated by multiplying its total surface area by the average costs of common materials used for constructing water storage structures per square meter. The most practical material was found to be plastic, at an overall cost of $67.05.
