Joule-Thomson Cooling of CO2

by Brendan Deuble

Submitted : Spring 2010

A system of CO2 expanding through a valve from high pressure to low pressure was examined in this work. The objective was to find the outlet temperature, T2 as a function of the outlet pressure P2. The problem does not provide the outlet temperature or the outlet volume, so s calculus must be used to solve for these values. The outlet temperature affects the value of ΔHig, the enthalpy change for an ideal gas and the outlet volume affects the values of H2R and H1R, the outlet residual terms. This system is governed by the equation ΔH= ΔHig + H2R
