Optimization of a Wood Pressure-Treating Process

by Isabel Arango

Submitted : Spring 2010

A company needs to produce 500,000 treated boards per year using a batch process. The objective of this project is to complete the production with the minimum annual cost possible. Based on the information that was given about costs associated with labor, set-up, processing of the equipment, and chemicals, an optimization equation is made which is derived to find the number of boards per batch, and then checked by using the second derivative test. This information is used to find the total costs and times required to meet the objective.
