Calculating the Volume of Concrete Needed for a Swimming Pool

by Shawn Broyles

Submitted : Spring 2020

The purpose of this project is to derive an equation that can be used to determine the amount of concrete that would be needed to be poured to create semi-sphere swimming pools of varying radii with 12 inches of concrete throughout the walls and floor. This can be achieved by thinking of the swimming pool as two semi-spheres with the larger semi-sphere having a radius that is exactly 12 inches longer than the other semi-sphere and then subtracting the smaller volume from the larger volume. With this process, an equation can be derived and then used to calculate the volume of concrete needed for the pools of varying radii.
