Impact of Shear Stress on Endothelial Permeability

by Sara Spampinato

Submitted : Fall 2014

The goal of this project is to characterize how the barrier function of endothelial cell’s monolayer changes in response to step changes in fluid shear stress. This is measured by an electrical cell substrate impedance sensor and a scatter plot is made from the results of the changes in cell barrier function. Applying the trapezoidal rule to find area under the curve in an Excel workbook, the total magnitude of the response of barrier function over time with step increases in shear stress could be determined. It was found that all three curves had an equivalent impact on the magnitude of the response of enhanced cell barrier function over time.
