Natural Sciences >> OtherModeling the Effects of the Invasive Burmese Python on Bobcat and Panther Populations in the Floridaby Jared Austin
Submitted : Spring 2014
The Burmese Python is a non-native invasive species in the Florida Everglades that has been growing rapidly and devastating mammal populations within the area. This project examines, through mathematical modeling using Euler’s Method, a system of differential equations, and Microsoft Excel, the disastrous ecological effects of the Burmese python on bobcat populations, and on the endangered Florida panther. The modeling shows that within this century, if python populations are not controlled, both big cat species will be driven to populations that are too low to recover.
