Engineering >> Mechanical EngineeringOptimizing Muzzel Velocity of a Rifle in Relation to Barrel Lengthby Jithin Sajan
Submitted : Fall 2013 In this project we investigate the relationship between the length of a rifle barrel and the velocity it produces. My hypothesis is that as the length of the barrel increases the velocity at the muzzle of the barrel also increases. But the increase in velocity is decremented by the force of friction acting upon the round in the barrel, the loss of energy through heat, and also in relation with Boyle’s law as the barrel becomes longer the volume in the barrel increases and thus reducing the pressure in the barrel. All of these factor come into play when trying to maximize muzzle velocity of the rifle.
