Engineering >> Mechanical EngineeringPredicting Cylinder Wall Distortion When Torque Plate Honingby Corey Tucker
Submitted : Fall 2013 With the advancement in engineering in the automotive industry more precision in manufacturing and performance upgrades must be considered. Specific precautions must be taken when doing aftermarket machining on internal combustion engines. Some of this aftermarket machining would include resurfacing of the cylinder head and honing or boring out cylinders of the engine block. I would like to focus on honing of an engine cylinder wall. The most precise method of cylinder wall honing to date is torque plate honing. Much caution needs to be taken in this process due to its cost as well as the benefits that can be achieved in the automotive industry. Using calculus and physics I will demonstrate how to predict the effects of using a torque plate given the approximate measurements of a BMW M20b52 engine. Our results will be demonstrative so applications can be applied to other engines.
