Submitted : Fall 2013 The objective of this project was to determine the volume of a stormwater pond that is irregular in shape. Once the measurements were received from the diagram (see figure 1 in appendices), the surface area of the bottom of the pond was calculated. The surface area for the bottom of the pond acted as a constant for the surface area equation. Since the pond is an irregular shape, the pond was broken down into pieces to determine surface area as a function of depth for the respective parts. Next, all of the pieces were added together along with the surface area for the bottom of the pond, which formed a polynomial equation. The surface area was calculated for the range of 0ft to 7ft using .5ft intervals (see figure 3). Finally, an equation for the volume of the stormwater pond was formed by taking the antiderivative of the surface area equation. The volume was calculated in 0.5ft intervals with a range between 0ft and 7ft to get the total volume of the irregularly shaped stormwater pond at respective heights. The depth, surface area and volume was then listed in the stage-storage table.
