Instructor:
- Dr. Wenxiu Ma, Office: PHY307, Phone: 974-3140

MW3:00-4:00pm and F10:00-11:00am (tentative) or by appointment.
Prerequisite:
-
Two years of high school algebra, and a semester of trigonometry or MAC1147 or MAC1114 or
MAC1140 or equivalent.
Text:
-
Robert T. Smith and Roland B. Minton, CALCULUS, 2nd edition, McGraw-Hill,
2002
-
Chapters 0 - 5: Sections 0.1-0.8 (two weeks); Sections 1.1-1.4
(two weeks); 2.1-2.9 (four weeks); Sections 3.1, 3.3-3.8 (three
weeks); Sections 4.1-4.6 (three weeks); Sections 5.1-5.2 (one
week)
-
Remark: Most lecture material is chosen from the textbook and the instructor
will also provide some additional examples and different proofs.
Tests:
- There will be three midterm tests and a
final examination. All are two hours.
- Test
1. Friday, September 20 (tentative)
- Test 2. Friday, October 18 (tentative)
- Test 3. Friday, November 15 (tentative)
- Final exam. 3:30am-5:30pm, Wednesday, December 11 (tentative)
- The contents covered by the tests will be announced in class. The final exam will be
comprehensive. No make-up test.
Assessment scheme:
-
- Attendance is optional, but highly recommended.
-
- Each of the tests counts for 20%. The final exam counts for 40%. Homework counts for 5% as
bonus points. The total score computed by the above weights is your final score, the maximum
being 105.
-
- Your grade is determined by your final score:
90 for A-,
80 for B-,
65 for C-,
50 for D-, etc.
Other plus and/or minuses will be assigned accordingly.
Homework assignments:
-
- There will be six homework assignments for the course. All chosen exercises will help you
to develop your skills in calculation
and more importantly, to develop reasoning skills and your ability to
apply the techniques you have learned to concrete situations.
- -
You are required to do
all homework exercises. Doing exercises is the best way to deepen
your understanding of the topics and to convince yourself that you
understand them.
- - Keep in mind the following statement by D. Hilbert: "A
mathematical problem should be difficult to entice us, yet not
inaccessible lest it mock our efforts."
- - Homework assigned in Week 6 and Week 10 will be collected on Friday, October 11 and
Friday, November 8 (tentative). The grader will only pick some of the problems to check.
