We tend to pay little attention to the things that surround us and have no visible impact on our livelihood. Oftentimes, those same surroundings drive the processes enabling our survival. Similarly, the importance of the mangroves is greatly underestimated in many coastal communities, only  to be realized when a resource conflict emerges. Seeing that over the past few years development  has thrived throughout the Costa Alegre region of Mexico, many small, agriculture based communities have shifted to tourism as the main source of income. Although one of many, La Manzanilla is a perfect example of this kind of community.
One of our goals is to provide the citizens of La Manzanilla with easily accessible information regarding the relationship between the mangrove ecosystem and sustainability. The course allows both, graduate and undergraduate students to collaborate on modules relating to the project in a field setting in hopes of attaining an interdisciplinary approach to the understanding of the ecosystem.
