Phase Compositions in Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium via the Coexistence Equation

by Edward Krause

Submitted : Spring 2009

This project examines vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) of a binary (two component) system with constant temperature and varying pressure in this research project for Engineering Calculus II. Given were a set of data points of x1, the liquid phase mole fraction composition of methanol, and the corresponding pressure (P) values, and plans to solve for the corresponding y1 values, which is the vapor phase mole fraction composition of methanol. Edward accomplishes these calculations by employing the coexistence equation, which requires numerical integration by using a first order Euler method. He creates an equation to model the curve of the x1
