Speed of Sound on the Surface of Venus

by Renita Singh

Submitted : Spring 2012

The surface of the planet Venus is a very inhospitable place – with a temperature of about 740 K, a pressure of about 93 bars and an atmosphere that is almost pure carbon dioxide. A future unmanned mission will make more precise atmospheric measurements. One of these will involve measuring the speed of sound between a central station and a rover.
