Effect of Tire Size on the Acceleration of a Monster Truck

by Mattias Ciabatti

Submitted : Spring 2012

The project’s objective was to determine acceleration and velocity for two different wheel sizes. The equations provided in the problem were not sufficient in solving for acceleration and velocity, however with simple substitution the equations could be altered to fit the data provided. In order to calculate the necessary values equations and values were entered into an excel spreadsheet. Both sets of data produced graphs with exponentially increasing curves. The two curves varied with respect to acceleration rate and final velocity. These variations led to the final conclusions about each tire size mentioned earlier. The relationship shown between the two tire sizes was that the smaller tire produced a higher rate of acceleration while the larger tire allowed for a larger maximum velocity. This indicates why many different tire sizes exist, each has its own purpose and advantage.
