An Optimization of Land to Produce the Most Gold Possible

by Matthew Wedebrock

Submitted : Spring 2012

My objective was to maximize the profit with a combination of “scholars” and “research facilities” from the online game King of the World, by means of calculus, with a limit of 50,000 acres of land. I did this by formulating equations for profit and land use, using a land use equation to eliminate the number of scholars from the profit equation, and then found the maximum amount of gold produced. From this, I was able to find that the maximum amount of gold produced with 50,000 acres was 4,387,870 gold, with a rounded 46 research facilities and 90,000 scholars.
