Submitted : Fall 2011 Calculus’ birth was in application, and no better application of calculus is seen than in engineering. Such usage of calculus in engineering is the designing and building of a two-part intersection that is based on the arc of an ellipse. By developing a function to arc the edge of a road, one can calculate, down to the nearest square-foot, how much asphalt and concrete would be needed if given a particular width to split up the two materials.
