Designing the Intersection of Two Streets

Calculus’ birth was in application, and no better application of calculus is seen than in engineering. Such usage of calculus in engineering is the designing and building of a two-part intersection that is based on the arc of an ellipse. By developing a function to arc the edge of a road, one can calculate, down to the nearest square-foot, how much asphalt and concrete would be needed if given a particular width to split up the two materials.
