Plotting Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagrams

by Mellanie de Mata

Submitted : Spring 2011

When designing a structure, engineers have to design each aspect down to the simple beams that, when put together, hold up the structure and any other forces that act on it. Knowing the internal forces are essential in designing a beam and engineers find them by using the two most commonly used tools in engineering: shear force and bending moment diagrams. The diagrams are derived by the relationship between shear forces and moments through basic rules of calculus. This project will explain the process or the derivation and integration of finding the diagrams from an example problem.
