Mathematical Model of Vaccination Against Cholera

by Orville Pemberton

Submitted : Spring 2011

The purpose of this project was to determine the minimum percentage of vaccinations of the Haitian population that would eradicate cholera. In order to study the predicted dynamics of infection after vaccination, a mathematic model must be developed. This model monitors four different groups of individuals: susceptible (S), infected (I), recovered (R), and vaccinated (V). If the vaccine confers life-long immunity, then a set of equations can be used to determine the rate of change in the number of susceptible, vaccinated, infected, and recovered individuals.
