Roller Coasters Need Calculus Too!

by Christina Marshall

Submitted : Spring 2011

A project consisting of a mathematical solution, using calculus, to find the maximum height for a launch roller coaster as a projectile. This project is proof that using calculus is important in the world of engineering to provide efficient and safe results in roller coaster design. After reviewing the results of the calculations, it can be gathered that it is much simpler to take the route of calculus than to spend unnecessary time and effort in physical trial and error.
