Optimization of a Batch Process

by Austin Figler

Submitted : Spring 2009

The problem of optimization is very common. To solve this problem I began by solving the problem using process of elimination. I guessed high and low numbers till I settled on what I found to be the most efficient number. Then I had to figure out how to present my project through calculus. I created an equation with one variable (X) for the cost of operation. X is the most efficient number of pieces per batch. I took the derivative of the equation and set it equal to 0 to find my value for X. My conclusion was that my calculated answer was not exactly the same as my
