Calculating Volume per Effective Area of the Membrane: Evaluating how fouling affects the Separatio

by Shelby Krebs

Submitted : Spring 2011

The purpose of this project is to calculate the volume of permeate solution per effective area of the membrane using polyethersulfone after 3 hours of filtration for the permeate solution of Cu(II) complexes with G4-NH2 for 5kD at pH 4. The permeate solution aforementioned can remove metal ions from water, therefore cleaning contaminated water. Two methods were used to calculate the volume from a set of points on a graph. The first is Simpson’s Multiple Segment 1/3 Rule. The second method used is the Trapezoidal Rule of Integration. The difference between the two values will then be determined. The difference between the values is important in that it can be used to determine the cost efficiency of the dendrimer in polyethersulfone permeate solution.
