Cut and Fill Analysis

by Julianne Zuknick

Submitted : Fall 2018

To perform a Cut-and-Fill analysis, first determine the width of the project. Next, obtain several elevation points along the mountain side through a survey, starting on one side of the property line and ending on the other side of said property line. Using those points, lay out the road curve on the most convenient elevation, plot both groups of points in excel, and create a line of best fit for the mountain side with the excel graph. Determine the points of intersection between the two graphs as well as the slopes and where to match existing elevations to deduce each cut and fill area.

Once it is determined where each cut and fill section is respectively, Use calculus to total the area in question. After each area has been cut or filled as need be, set up a new graph of the proposed ground layout of the mountain and road combined.
