Analysis of Fluctuating Temperature on Performance of Filtration Material

Submitted : Spring 2018

In this study we model theoretical behavior of filtration media that are subject to fluctuating temperatures. We first set about generating visual aids with which to represent the behavior, then began formulating a mathematical function that effectively represents this behavior. A major challenge during the study was figuring out exactly how to mathematically demonstrate increasing or decreasing performance qualities while maintaining a sine wave.

Once we established this formula we were able to calculate the disparity in performance of an improving or deteriorating filtration medium. Overall this information is critical towards advancing both industry standards and consumer knowledge about the influence of fluctuating temperature on filter performance. Having identified three types of theoretical behavior – Static (S), Degenerate (D), and Meliorate (M) – we can recommend that the industry implement these identifiers on their packaging and raise consumer awareness of the differences.
