Assessing the rate of change of ant lion metapopulation

Certain animals depend on migration to different locations in order to obtain necessary resources for survival. These animals may be considered a metapopulation – a network of local populations that are connected through immigration and emigration. The metapopulation of a species of ant lions serves as a model for island-mainland model, where a large mainland population provides a source of colonists for empty sites for a set of islands. Factors such as the probability of local extinction and probability of local colonization can have a strong influence on the persistence and survival of species in a metapopulation.
