Mathematical Analysis of Impact Ankle Brace Overuse

by Amanda Johnson

Submitted : Fall 2017

This analysis was prompted by the overwhelming number of competitive volleyball players who have begun wearing ankle braces to prevent injury, which may be leading to a greater number of injuries. To determine whether there is a large change in the amount of force distributed over the ankles, knees, and hips because of the use of an ankle brace a modified impulse formula was used. The calculations showed that the average force distributed through the ankle was about equal when wearing the brace to not wearing it which was unexpected due to the greater mobility through dorsiflexion and plantarflexion when not wearing the brace.
